Using English sitcoms to promote students’ vocabulary learning: a study at Nguyen Tat Thanh University

This study investigated the effectiveness of English sitcoms in enhancing vocabulary learning among 220 non-English-major B1-level students at Nguyen Tat Thanh University. Using a mixed-methods approach—pre/post-tests, questionnaires, classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews—the results showed significant vocabulary improvement in the experimental group (mean score 74.2) compared to the control group (63.1). Students expressed positive attitudes toward sitcom use, and interviews revealed teachers’ insights and noted certain limitations. The findings suggest that sitcoms, when thoughtfully integrated, are effective and engaging tools for vocabulary instruction.
