- Tài liệuCritical Thinking in Everyday Life(MPDI, 2025) Dwyer, Christopher P.Critical thinking is a metacognitive process that, through purposeful, self-regulatory reflective judgment; the skills of analysis, evaluation, and inference; and a disposition towards thinking, increases the chances of producing a logical conclusion to an argument or a solution to a problem. As a result of the dramatically increasing availability of information (including both misinformation and disinformation), the need for critical thinking is arguably more important now than ever. Given the role of higher-order cognitive processes for the foundation of critical thinking, the relationship between intelligence and critical thinking is important to consider, not only for readers of the Journal of Intelligence, but for anyone with an interest in researching cognitive science and education, or simply those wishing to enhance the quality of thinking in their everyday lives. Given that a large body of CT research has focused on its conceptualisation and enhancement through educational strategies, this Special Issue is unique in its scope due to exploring the application of critical thinking to real-world settings and everyday life through a collection of original research, a review of the literature, and position pieces regarding topics of utmost relevance to such applications.
- Tài liệuCultivating Inclusive Classrooms: Practices in Special Education(MDPI, 2025) Nel, Mirna; Bornman, JuanThe purpose of this Special Issue was to gather recent and high-quality research reports which integrated or investigated a socio-ecological approach towards inclusive teaching and learning practices in special education. Bronfenbrenner’s original ecological systems model was regarded as the fundamental influence on how to understand and apply a socio-ecological approach. The socio-ecological approach acknowledges and incorporates contextual factors, as well as inter-relational aspects between contexts, both of which are quintessential in attaining successful learning for learners in special education. In this context, inclusive education remains both a global priority and an evolving challenge, particularly within special education contexts where diverse learner needs demand innovative, evidence-based classroom practices. This Special Issue brings together fifteen impactful studies that collectively deepen our understanding of how inclusive classrooms can be cultivated, supported, and sustained across a variety of educational settings worldwide. They highlight a range of critical themes, from intervention programs that foster autonomy in young learners to the importance of teacher efficacy, community collaboration, inclusive policy, and systemic support mechanisms. Together, these studies underscore the essential role of differentiated pedagogical strategies, strategic intersectoral partnerships, value co-creation, and ongoing professional development as foundational pillars of inclusive education.

- Tài liệuEmpowering Teacher Professionalization with Digital Competences(MDPI, 2025) Rubach, Charlott; Lazarides, RebeccaThe present Special Issue provides a platform for experts from both teacher education and teacher professional development who have examined the quality and design of technology-supported learning environments and their impact on pre-service and in-service teachers’ digital competencies. In line with research on high-quality teaching, the studies in this Special Issue emphasize both the process dimension, i.e., how instruction is designed, and the product dimension, i.e., what is to be learned. By drawing on these findings, we are now in a position to not only conclude that certain formats successfully foster teachers’ digital competencies but also to understand how such learning formats should be designed in order to be effective. The work presented in this Special Issue informs education research about central preconditions to foster teachers‘ digital competencies systematically, as well as providing knowledge for educational practice on the design principles of teacher education and professional development programs for teachers.

- Tài liệuGrounding Cognition in Perceptual Experience(MDPI, 2025) Bianchi, Ivana; Actis-Grosso, Rossana; Ball, LindenThis reprint presents a multifaceted reflection on the influence of perceptual experience on various aspects of cognitive performance. It brings together contributions that demonstrate the importance of properties that emerge from perceptual experience in shaping our mental representations, beliefs, language, imagination, evaluations, actions, and interactions. The term 'perceptual experience' was chosen for the title over the more familiar 'perception' to emphasize that our focus is on human phenomenological experience rather than brain activity. This reprint demonstrates the role of experience in contemporary research in psychology and cognitive science within a broad framework. The chapters cover a wide range of topics and address various questions. One such question is how perceptual experience contributes to our conceptualization of experience. This relates to basic same-different categorization, judgements of numerosity, as well as the experienced qualities of environments (e.g. restorative environments) or movements (e.g. optimal movements). It also relates to the pleasantness of pictures and the naive theories we develop based on perception, and to how we shape paradigms such as those of 'illusions'. This volume also addresses other questions, such as how perceptual experience is reflected in linguistic configurations and how perception influences reasoning processes, memory, and empathic responses to descriptions of experiences. The thirteen papers in this reprint each provide answers to these questions from a unique point of view.
- Tài liệuIncremental and Innovative Approaches to Professional Development for Mathematics Teachers(MDPI, 2025) Otten, Samuel; Candela, Amber G.; Araujo, Zandra DeProfessional development researchers and teacher educators have been striving to improve mathematics instruction for decades, but in many places, there has been an inertia of procedurally focused mathematics instruction that has been incredibly resistant to change. Even when specific professional development (PD) efforts have found success in certain contexts or with certain teachers, it has proven difficult to sustain and disseminate these instructional improvements on a broader scale. This Special Issue on PD for mathematics teachers includes contributions reflecting on the limitations of transformational PD (PD that seeks profound changes in mathematics instruction) and studies on innovative and incremental approaches to PD striving to make instructional changes more manageable for teachers in their busy lives and complex educational contexts, and perhaps thus more likely to sustain and spread. Some of the featured research on incremental PD breaks down transformational practices into specific pieces, whereas other studies provide teachers with choices of smaller facets of teaching upon which to focus. Overall, this Special Issue urges the field to consider how incremental approaches to PD for mathematics teachers might address some of the limitations of typical transformational efforts.

- Tài liệuIntroduction to Statistics in the Psychological Sciences(University of Missouri - St. Louis, 2021) Cote, Linda R.; Gordon, Rupa; Randell, Chrislyn E.; Schmitt, Judy; Guerra, RudyIntroduction to Statistics in the Psychological Sciences provides an accessible introduction to the fundamentals of statistics, and hypothesis testing as need for psychology students. The textbook introduces the fundamentals of statistics, an introduction to hypothesis testing, and t Tests. Related samples, independent samples, analysis of variance, correlations, linear regressions and chi-squares are all covered along with expanded appendices with z, t, F correlation, and a Chi-Square table. The text includes key terms and exercises with answers to odd-numbered exercises. Psychology students often find statistics courses to be different from their other psychology classes. There are some distinct differences, especially involving study strategies for class success. The first difference is learning a new vocabulary—it is similar to learning a new language. Knowing the meaning of certain words will help as you are reading the material and working through the problems. Secondly, practice is critical for success; reading over the material is not enough. Statistics is a subject learned by doing, so make sure you work through any homework questions, chapter questions, and practice problems available. Statistical knowledge gives you a set of skills employable in graduate school and the workplace. Data science is a burgeoning field, and there is practical significance in learning this material. The statistics presented in this book are some of the most common ones used in research articles, and we hope by the end of this OER you’ll feel comfortable reading (and not skipping!) the results section of an article. This work is broken into 14 chapters, covering the fundamentals of statistics, and hypothesis testing.
